A tribute to Johnny Lawes

While studying at Exeter college in the 90s, music was my passion. I sent my CV to record labels, but there wasn’t a great deal of them in Devon, so initially music was a hobby, designing websites for local musicians. By chance, I crossed paths with this man, who gave me my break, and has been an inspiration throughout my career. I became a promoter, media manager and A&R for London-based labels and Internationally renowned artists, thanks to Johnny Lawes.

One of the greatest and most honourable managers of the British recording industry. His catalogue topped charts, and defined British R&B music, with a roster that included Mark Morrison, Gabrielle, Don-E, and China Black.

The world famous 02 Academy Brixton said that Johnny was an integral part of their creation and history. I can echo that, by saying my company So, Let’s Talk would not be in existence today, as I would not have a career in music spanning almost 20 years, if it wasn’t for the opportunities this man gave me.

Working for Johnny on music by Mark Morrison, to later becoming Head of Online for Mark’s MackLife Records, are some of my most proudest moments, which gave me the knowledge and experience to form my own record label and become self-employed, for which I am forever indebted.

Over the last few years, Johnny and I studied ‘music-streaming’ trends in detail, continuing to help up-and-coming artists create pathways for a career in music. With four decades in the business, Johnny’s expertise was unprecedented.

I launched So, Let’s Talk in 2018. When our first release (Osborne – “Complete”) reached 3 Million streams, Johnny’s response was; “Congratulations on your success reaching 3 million that’s quite an achievement – Next step 10 million.” His unending encouragement and support has been, and will continue to be an inspiration. The said single has now hit 12 Million, my labels first 4 releases tally over 25 Million streams and have hit Download Charts around the world, 100% independent. A vision, goal and dream I have been able to achieve thanks to my friend and mentor for almost 20 consistent years.

God bless and rest in peace, Johnny Lawes 🙏
